Title:

Using Design Rationale to Manage Culture-Bound Metaphors for International User Interfaces

Author:

Carroll, J.M.

Abstract:

It is often acknowledged that user interface metaphors rely on culturally-specific knowledge. However, designing user interfaces unavoidably involves designing user interface metaphors. Thus, designers need to keep track of their use of metaphors and to reason carefully about why particular metaphors are used with respect to cultural knowledge and practices. Design rationale, making explicit the cultural theories and reasoning behind user interface design decisions, provides a candidate medium for developing and applying knowledge in international user interface design.
