Title:
Culture(s) in User Interface Design for the Web and Mobile ComputingAuthor:
Marcus, A.Abstract:
This lecture introduces Geert Hofstede’s classic cultural anthropological study, Cultures and Organizations, in which he identifies five fundamental dimensions of world cultures. These dimensions are evidenced at work, at home, in schools, and in families through symbols, heroes, rituals, and values. In the lecture I shall define and explain these dimensions, then discuss their impact on the design of user interfaces and information visualization in Web-based communication and consumer/embedded information appliances intended for global and/or multicultural distribution.Original publication:
