This paper contains the main findings of an ethnographic study conducted in Beijing among the mobile phone users of the lower middle class. The aim of the study was to define cultural and subcultural factors affecting mobile phone design. According to the findings, enabling localization and customization of the handset as well as identification of consumer types are a means to develop a flexible product offering that can meet the diverse and demanding user needs.Original publication:
