This paper outlines the steps necessary to design Human Machine Interaction (HMI) in automotive navigation systems such that the system is able to adapt to users from different cultures automatically (exemplified by Chinese and German culture). A survey of current research in cross-cultural user interface design shows that some cultural variables have not been thoroughly investigated so far. Perspectives to obtain usable values for cultural variables in cross-cultural HMI design are presented.Original publication:
