Title:
When Culture Meets Technology and When Technology Meets CultureAuthor:
Kirah.A.Abstract:
This talk will discuss the dialectic between technology and culture. Technology plays a role in transforming culture, but culture also plays a role in transforming social technologies. Using multiple case studies from global ethnographic field research and participatory design in 12 countries, I aim to show how, on the one hand, we find the level of technological adoption as a mitigating factor in determining what types of social software are being used and how they are being used. On the other hand, culture and social context mitigates what is successful and what is not on the social front. All of the services that are being used today come from the motivations and aspirations of everyday people in their everyday lives. By focusing on these motivations and aspirations from before products and services are conceived, we are better able to design and build for the people and by the people.Original publication:
