Based upon a review of two European Union funded projects that aimed to support usability in India and China this paper discusses the localization of effective usability practice in these countries. For localization to be achieved three non-sequential (indeed iterative) elements are required: firstly a redefinition of HCI and usability practice, secondly the formation of a national organization around the redefined discipline that can actively promote HCI and usability, and thirdly the roll-out of effective practice in industry.Original publication:
